My journey into engraving began with a love for reviving rare and almost forgotten skills. In Australia, many traditional crafts are close to extinction, and I wanted to breathe new life into them. Hand finishing tools embody that mission, bringing the art of embossing and gilding back into the hands of makers.
Traditionally used in bookbinding, finishing tools allow for the creation of intricate patterns and decorative details on covers. But their use doesn’t end there, any leather project can be elevated with these tools, adding a refined and professional finish.
Each tool is crafted with care:
- Handles are made from reclaimed ironbark timber, shaped with a refined design (thanks to Darryn from DAS Bookbinding) to sit comfortably in the hand and prevent slips.
- The brass sections are deeply engraved for strength and a snug fit within the handle, ensuring durability and precision.
The result is a tool that not only performs beautifully but also adds a touch of quality and tradition to every item it helps create.
